Karen Gill Consultancy - Career Development for Lawyers -
Karen offers, in conjunction with Career Contours, a bespoke service based on one-to-one career coaching sessions. Supportive yet objective, she has a wealth of experience in the legal market and in options for lawyers inside and outside the law.

If you would like to explore the possibility of career change or want to discuss any aspect of your career development, she is here to offer expert career guidance and assistance. Some of the more common situations she has assisted with are:

Exploring alternative careers for lawyers
Many of us question our commitment to the law at some stage in our careers. This may be a temporary or a more fundamental source of unease and anxiety. Karen works with many clients to explore their career choices and what really motivates them, to work out what they have to offer and challenge the common belief that 'I'm a lawyer - that's all I can do'. Once clarity has been achieved she can then assist in a very practical way, helping you devise a job search strategy to secure what you want.

Redundancy
Redundancy coaching support has been a key service for many clients recently -Karen understands the effects that redundancy can have on self-esteem and general wellbeing and has helped lawyers at all levels work their way back into new roles, either inside or outside the law with renewed self-confidence - even in poor market conditions.

Career progression
It is not uncommon for even the most able of lawyers to need assistance in developing their full potential within the law - career coaching can help identify barriers (for example, lack of confidence or poor work/life balance) which may be holding you back. Or you may want to improve some of the skills which are vital to your career success - leadership or management skills for example. Karen can then work with you to develop career development strategies to help you achieve your true potential.

Post-partner careers
Karen also has experience of helping lawyers, particularly partners,
facing retirement issues. Partners are retiring at an increasingly early age, and it is important to be prepared for a sudden lifestyle change and, in many cases, a significant shock to the system. Karen has worked with many senior lawyers with retirement in mind - after life as a partner, working out what will make you fulfilled in the remaininder of your career can be challenging. Retirement coaching to help you reflect, to explore options, to gather good information about opportunities and devise a successful transition strategy.

Returning to the law
Whether you are returning to your career after maternity leave, illness or a career break, we understand that you may have anxieties about how you will cope once you are back at work, particularly in the current economic environment. Career coaching can help you explore the challenges ahead and examine the resources you have and can acquire, to help you meet these challenges and ensure the best possible start on your return.

Becoming self-employed
Setting up a new enterprise can be a hugely challenging - and significantly rewarding - career choice. Karen can help you to explore whether this is a realistic option for you - both practically and emotionally - and, if so, help you devise a strategy for success in your new business.

CVs, Business plans and interview coaching
Of course you may just want to tap into our experience and expertise to draft an impressive CV or business plan, or to prepare for a forthcoming interview with some intensive interview coaching - and we will be more than happy to help.
